If and when you have a dna test done you need a very wide and tall family tree in order to make all the matches that will be revealed. It is hard to confirm degrees of cousinship without knowing all the aunts and uncles in each generation.

An excellent point!

I took 23andMe's autosomal DNA test, which tells you what cousins, both male and female, have matches to your DNA, and, based on the number of segments you match and the length of those matches, how far away the relationship likely is (i.e., first, second, third, or distant cousin).

I found that the number of people in my family tree "ballooned" very quickly when looking for the paper trail to the genetic matches; it now has 2.5 times the number of people it had before I got my results!

Has anyone else had a similar experience?
