The 1930 US Census

The 1930 US census took place as of April 1, 1930. It included all of the United States, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, as well as the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the Panama Canal.

Questions on the 1930 Census

The questions asked on the 1930 census did not vary much from those on the 1920 census. The questions asked were as follows:

  • Address;
  • house number or farm;
  • dwelling number;
  • number of family in order of visitation;
  • Name

  • Name of each person whose place of abode was in this family on January 1, 1920
  • Relation

  • relationship to head of family;
  • Tenure

  • Home owned or rented
  • Value of home, if rented, or monthly rental, if rented
  • Radio set?
  • Does this family live on a farm?
  • Personal description

  • gender;
  • color or race;
  • age at last birthday;
  • marital condition;
  • age at first marriage;
  • Education

  • Attended school or college any time since Sept 1, 1919;
  • Whether able to read and write;
  • Place of Birth

  • place of birth;
  • father's place of birth;
  • mother's place of birth;
  • Mother Tongue (or Native Language) of Foreign Born

  • Language spoken in home before coming to the US
  • Citizenship

  • year of immigration;
  • whether naturalized or alien;
  • Occupation

  • trade, profession or particular kind of work;
  • industry, business;
  • class of worker;
  • No. of farm schedule
  • Employment

  • Whether actually at work
  • Veterans

  • Whether a veteran of the US military or naval forces mobilized for any war or expedition
    • Yes or no
    • What war or expedition

  • No. of farm schedule
